So, I don't know about for you guys, but here most of our electricty is generated by fossil fuels which are running out. Have you got any particular opinions on where we should get our electricty from and which way do you think is best? Should we use nuclear power, carry on using fossil fuels or use renewable sources such as wind and sun?

Here in Florida, I'm sure using solar power would pay for itself (or something like that anyway) with all the sunlight we get. I don't know why they haven't tried something like that in the first place anyway.
Carrying on with the use of fossil fuels isn't exactly a safe option since we will be running out of it fairly soon. If we continue to rely on fossil fuels instead of resorting to less polluting means, then not only will we further destroy our ozone, but we'll have no alternative when the fossil fuels' time has run out.

Yeah, I agree about the fossil fuels. That and they can be rather harmful.
I found out something about solar power the other day. You don't actually need bright sunlight to power them, just daylight. The down side is they're very expensive to make. But then again, if they're on your roof you don't have to pay for the transportation of the electricty. We wouldn't be allowed (or able) to have one on our roof though.

I don't know why they haven't tried something like that in the first place anyway.
Since you live in Florida, you should know about all of the hurricanes that have been hitting us for a while. Those solar panels are not only expensive, they're delicate.
Insurance companies don't want to pay and the state is already running a few restoration projects. Too much money that we don't have. If we continue to rely on fossil fuels instead of resorting to less polluting means, then not only will we further destroy our ozone, but we'll have no alternative when the fossil fuels' time has run out.
It does seem that the world's leaders are treating this 'running out of oil' issue way too lightly . . .
I just hope they have a plan they're not telling us.

I use fossil fuels, but I'm thinking of using solar power when I get my own place. I know it's expensive, but the electric bills are like up to my eyeballs.

Though I live in Florida, I've only been here a year, and this past 07 we werent hit with any hurricanes, so I don't really know much about the hurricane....aspect of Florida.

I believe that the plan is to bank on as much money as they can until they've had their fun.

While I like the idea of using solar power as a viable energy source, I prefer the use of generators.
These create their own energy rather than depend on something to provide it for them.[/glow]

And what will power the generator initially...?

Good question Luna. Surely something has to turn the turbines in the generator?
I'm not sure about this, but I remember seeing on the news once (and by remember I mean vaguely so I'm not sure if this is correct) that to make solar cells you needed very pure forms of certain elements and getting these pure forms causes a lot of pollution along the way.

we are developing better solar cells. i think renowable is the only way we need to go. nuclear is good but if we us it on the scale needed to replace fossil fuels it wouldn't take long before we run out of fuel for nuclear plants. sadly none of the current alternatives to fossil fuels can even come close to replacing them. i'd list them of and explain what i know about them but it would take to long. if you want may thoughts on any fossil fuels alternatives just ask. this is a subject i've actually studied a little.

well electricity is provided by fossil fuel burning in my country there's probably only a hand full of places with solar generators. In some other Caribbean countries like Barbados almost every house has a water heater which also collects solar energy and they run on fossil fuels too so they sorta have 2 sources of energy to run on.

I once heard a plan... they were basically going to make a huge sattellite with solar panels, and let that gather a bunch of energy... I just wonder how well that would work...

i have no idea how they'd get the energy to earth. run an extension cord

i think ill let my kids' kids deal with that problem. before it runs out, ill be dead (dont think itll run out in the next 70 years )

who cares how they get this energy.....its almost too late to fix the earth
